Democratic Republic of Congo:
- country located in central Africa
- one of the world’s poorest and least developed nations
- conflict began when the government refused to recognise a traditional chief
- the chief then set up a militia (civilian soldiers) and was later killed in fighting
- starvation crisis started because of years of violence and instability
Starvation Crisis:
- more than 3 million people are now at risk of starvation
- hundreds of thousands of children could die in the next few months if aid is not delivered
- 1.5 million people have been forced from their homes – most of them children
- the World Food Programme (WFP) only has 1% of the funds needed to help these people
Why did I choose this article?:
- heartbreaking to see that so many children could potentially die
- another humanitarian disaster
- more funding and resources are needed to deliver the food aid in time
Why should we care?:
- we simply cannot ignore the fact that at least 3 million people will potentially die of starvation if no help is given
